| (H2S)..Detection, Drilling formations that have H2S
can encounter some very serious problems and if not recognized or detected as soon as possible, the out
come can be devastating.
I
started to write this section as far back as August
1998 at the time I contacted many of the manufactures
of H2s equipment in the hope that I may get the
latest equipment and information. As with every other
section on this site the response has been zero.
I
find it very hard to understand this negative
attitude. The industry constantly talks about and
safety, lack of training and lack of understanding,
yet very few are prepared to do much about it
Fortunately some of the many visitor to the site take
safety some what more serious then many of the
companies and have sent in some very useful tip bit
In the early 80's 17 people died when H2s was allowed to
enter the wellbore and migrate to surface. Why? their reaction was wrong. Not only must we recognize it but your reactions must be swift. There
is no second chance.
At the time of this action the drilling contractor
was then and is still to day one of the most
respected, professional and safety concise
drilling companies in the industry. A simple mistake
made by one or two people lead others to follow.
H2s is a marvels equalizer and treats everyone the
same "it kills them" One could say that the late 70s and
early 80's saw the beginning of companies learning to
understand the danger of H2s. Companies opened up schools to train their people others
employed specialist companies to go out to the location as check and
install complete protective systems. Every one coming to the operation
would be briefed on what to do and where to go in an emergency.
Safety and rescuers is
the prime consideration in an H2S emergency. Response must be immediate
if a victim is survive.
However any rescue attempt can only be accomplished
providing the rescuing teams are equipped with
breathing apparatus or the danger of the gas
has been removed. The importance of moving a victim
from the source and up wind of the danger area can
not be over stressed
In such area it is important to set up a buddy system "people working
in pairs" all should be trained in what to do in an emergency and
understand the and know how to initiate the procedure that will alert and bring
into force the contingency and rescue plan.
