Take a learning journey through billions of years of Earth history

This indispensable guide to the fundamentals of geology is the ideal way to introduce yourself to all the basics, from rocks, minerals, and fossil fuels to earthquakes, volcanoes, and plate tectonics. Using quick quizzes and self-tests to reinforce key concepts, Geology carefully walks you through billions of years of Earth history. Illustrated with more than one hundred specially commissioned illustrations and fifty photographs that help clarify difficult concepts, this easy-to-follow book is an interactive resource for anyone interested in learning more about our planet.

With the renowned readability of the Lutgens/Tarbuck/Tasa team, the Eleventh Edition ofEssentials of Geology continues to enhance both the approach and the visual presentation that has made this text a best-seller.

This revision incorporates a new active learning approach throughout each chapter which offers the students a structured learning path and provides a reliable, consistent framework for mastering the chapter concepts. It also includes new additions to the visual program and current issues, such as climate change, are thoroughly updated.

Grade 8 Up—Since the first edition of this book was published in 1998, technology for geological fieldwork has improved immensely. The coverage of these innovations, in a new chapter called "Monitoring Earth," is this book's best feature. It provides useful overviews, at a level of detail and in a vocabulary that is perfect for the audience, of concepts such as satellite laser ranging, which is used to measure the movement of continents, and the use of satellites in mapping the ozone layer. The rest of the book discusses the planet's formation; plate tectonics; methods of rock creation; how the sea, ice, and wind change the landscape; deciphering Earth's history from fossils and other rocks; exploitation of rocks and minerals, and, in another updated section, provides lists of prominent geologists and relevant institutions.

With its strong focus on readability and illustrations, this trusted best seller makes an often-complex subject more accessible for readers like you. It offers a meaningful, non-technical survey that is informative and up-to-date for learning basic principles and concepts. For the Tenth Edition, the text’s design and figures have been updated, and the chapter on climate change has been revised significantly.

An absolutely first-class piece of writing…a very full and solid work that is bound to stand as a reliable textbook for the students and an essential reference for engineers. …All will enjoy the book and will dip into it many times. …The author is to be specially commended for having assembled such a set of chapters for the production of the volume that will be of inestimable value to the target audience, besides being also enormously valuable in a difficult situation as an immediate on-the-spot reference to those already well immersed in the field. … No one writing about this subject for students in future, will be able to ignore this graceful and probing book so imaginatively organized

A conveniently arranged petroleum fluids reference book covering components, properties, and equations for the various fluids and gases. Contents: Introduction and scope Water-in-crude-oil emulsions Characterization, phase behavior, and field processing of crude oil Separation of gas, oil and water Dehydration and desalting of crude oil Crude sweetening and stabilization Pumps Measurement of crude oil Fire heaters Pipeline transportation Energy conservation Instrumentation and process control Pressure relief and flaring Case histories Appendices.

Lavishly illustrated in color, this textbook takes an applied approach to introduce undergraduate students to the basic principles of structural geology. The book provides unique links to industry applications in the upper crust, including petroleum and groundwater geology, which highlight the importance of structural geology in exploration and exploitation of petroleum and water resources. Topics range from faults and fractures forming near the surface to shear zones and folds of the deep crust. Students are engaged through examples and parallels drawn from practical everyday situations, enabling them to connect theory with practice. Containing numerous end-of-chapter problems, e-learning modules, and with stunning field photos and illustrations, this book provides the ultimate learning experience for all students of structural geology.

This combination of text and lab book presents an entirely different approach to structural geology. Designed for undergraduate laboratory classes, it provides a step-by-step guide for solving geometric problems arising from structural field observations. The book discusses both traditional methods and cutting-edge approaches, with emphasis given to graphical methods and visualization techniques that support students in tackling challenging two- and three-dimensional problems. Numerous exercises encourage practice in using the techniques, and demonstrate how field observations can be converted into useful information about geological structures and the processes responsible for creating them.
faults geology There aren't nearly enough maps to help you locate the faults, nor are there enough GPS coordinates given, nor do you get anything more than a boring cartoon summary for most of the faults. Given the amazing subject matter, and strange science that exist for each of them, The geologists who work on these faults are some of the most fascinating and colorful people you'll ever meet, and veryone who has worked on faults has some really funny or scary stories to tell about them.

Geology of Carbonate Reservoirs: The Identification, Description and Characterization of Hydrocarbon Reservoirs in Carbonate Rocks by Wayne M. Ahr (Aug 11, 2008)

?This reference presents the information scientist's need to explore and develop carbonate reservoirs in the most efficient and profitable ways.? (APADE, 2009)

Carbonate Reservoirs [Hardcover

This book is well-written and easy to read. There is a lot of information there but it is presented in an interesting way, with useful summaries. ...Clyde Moore is to be congratulated on writing a fine book that is a must for all carbonate and petroleum geologists and which comes with a CD-ROM that will be very useful indeed for graduate students and others to browse through while reading the book.

Carbonate Reservoir Characterization: An Integrated Approach [Hardcover

F. Jerry Lucia, working in America’s main oil-rich state, has produced a work that goes after one of the holy grails of oil prospecting. One main target in petroleum recovery is the description of the three-dimensional distribution of petrophysical properties on the interwell scale in carbonate reservoirs. Doing so would improve performance predictions by means of fluid-flow computer simulations. Lucia’s book focuses on the improvement of geological, petrophysical, and geostatistical methods, describes the basic petrophysical properties, important geology parameters, and rock fabrics from cores, and discusses their spatial distribution. A closing chapter deals with reservoir models as an input into flow simulators

Seismic Imaging of Carbonate Reservoirs and Systems (AAPG Memoir) [Hardcover]

Recent advances in seismic acquisition, processing and visualization techniques image carbonate strata with unprecedented resolution. This volume documents the current state of the art in seismic imaging and interpreting of carbonate systems and captures the dynamics of the carbonate system on a large exploration scale and on a small reservoir scale.
The book emphasizes the newest approaches in seismic visualization, seismic sedimentology and stratigraphy, seismic attribute analysis and their application for building improved 3-D reservoir models. Among the topics covered are the delineation of the complex histories of carbonate platform sequences from seismic data, the relationships between geometries and forming processes, the imaging of faults for improved mapping of potential fluid migration pathways, and use of seismic attributes for the extraction of rock properties in the sedimentary bodies.

Reservoir Quality Prediction in Sandstones and Carbonates (AAPG Memoir, 69) [Hardcover]

This comprehensive volume addresses the challenges of accurate prediction and ongoing refinement of reservoir quality throughout a reservoir's life-cycle. Worldwide case studies present the predictive aspects of both siliciclastic and carbonate reservoir characteristics. With a focus on diagenetic effects, the book emphasizes the newest approaches to reservoir quality prediction using various methodologies.
